Stop Self-Sabotaging! Here Are 5 Ways to Unf*ck Yourself and Live Your Life Empowered

self-sabotaging-unfuck yourself-featured

At some point, everyone has done it. Whether it’s going back on a promise we made to ourselves, backtracking on goals, or just plain procrastination, we’ve all self-sabotaged. And once we’ve done it once, we’re more likely to repeat the same bad habit. It’s time to unfuck yourself – keep reading to find out how!

Studies show people with high levels of “self-control” aren’t constantly battling temptation – they’re simply relying on good habits.

The best first step is to replace old, negative habits, with new, positive ones – and it only takes anywhere from 18-66 days to form a new habit! Think of it this way: it’s much easier to replace a bad habit with a good one than it is to just stop doing the bad one.

Here Are 5 Ways You Self-Sabotage, and How to Unfuck Yourself:

1. Self-Sabotaging Statement: “I don’t have the time.”

Most people would say that they are extremely busy people. In a study with 10,000 adults, roughly half of young people (aged 18 to 34) said they overstate their own busyness to others.

No matter how “busy” you are, you are never too busy to brush your teeth or shower on a regular basis. You make time for these essential things. So, the things that you “don’t have time for” are really things that you deem non-essential.

How to stop: Plan a time to accomplish the things on your list, but also re-wording the phrasing in your head. Instead of “I don’t have time for . . . ” say “It isn’t my priority to.”

This will help you evaluate what you will make time for and what isn’t important for us in the moment. (Example: “It’s not a priority to call my grandma today” triggers more of a response than “I’m too busy to call my grandma today.”)

2. Self-Sabotaging Statement: “I’ll deal with it later.”

“Later” is an imaginary time-frame that sets us up for failure. If you messed up on your diet and had a brownie (or three), you don’t need to wait until tomorrow to begin again. Simply begin again, right there. We learn this in meditation constantly.

It isn’t about having an empty mind, it’s about returning to the breath. Not “later” but now.

Here’s how to stop: If it takes less than five minutes, do it now. Dishes, that email you’ve been meaning to send, paying a bill, thanking a family member, etc. These things sit on your list for hours when they could be done before the barista has made your matcha latte.

For things that take more than five minutes, take five minutes to make a plan of when you will do it and make sure to follow through. It might be helpful to set up a reward system, or find an accountability partner to keep you on track.

3. Self-Sabotaging Habit: Comparing ourselves to others.

It’s said that “Comparison is the thief of joy.” Comparison is so deeply embedded in our culture – from keeping up with the Joneses, to competing in sports or education, to every fashion and beauty ad ever created. How can you move past it?

Here’s how to stop: This solution is deeply personal and varies from person to person. I’ve had a great experience with gratitude journals and affirmations that make me look at the big picture. They help generate positive feelings for the present moment.

Another key thing to do is to unfollow people on social media that don’t make you feel good. I officially give you permission! I don’t care if they’re the “best,” most “inspirational” guru out there, if this person and their perfectly crafted Insta-world makes you feel like sh*t, then don’t have them on your feed!

4. Self-Sabotaging Habit: Creating impossible expectations.

I once had the goal to read one book per week. Sure, some people can accomplish this feat without much hurry involved, but I am not one of those people. So when I made this impossible-for-me goal, I was predictably disappointed within the first month when, despite my hurry, I hadn’t even finished my third book.

Here’s how to stop: Be realistic. Review your past habits in the department you’re looking to grow. Your next step should look similar to what you already have in place – baby steps. Once you do that, break it down into the smallest steps you can think of.

You might find that there are more steps than you realized, and that starting even smaller could get the ball rolling. (Ex: Triathlon. You might want to start with running a 5k, but when you realize that a 5k is 3.1 miles, and you’ve never run even one mile, then maybe running one mile is a more realistic goal.)

5. Self-Sabotaging Habit: Analysis Paralysis.

Analysis Paralysis happens when we are confronted with a decision that we can’t decide on. We think we are being logical by comparing the facts or writing pros and cons lists. But, in the end, we are made useless by the information and are rendered emotionally or physically immobile.

Here’s how to solve it: Just do it! I know. It is the hardest and most impossible thing to do. If you could “just do it,” you would have already! But I will say it again: if it doesn’t hurt you or another person, do it!

Don’t make another list. Remove any delay mechanisms (“I’ll do it later,” “I’m too busy,” or any numbing versions of self-sabotaging like drug use or comfort eating), and pick the option that comes to you organically.

Measure the pros and cons, sure. Be prepared, yes. But don’t let those things stop you from making a change and growing yourself spiritually, physically, or emotionally.

Stop Self-Sabotaging and Unfuck Yourself!

Self-sabotage is a common and preventable occurrence. Everyone does it, and there is no fool-proof way to stop it completely. With these five examples, you can see that you can take negative habits, halt them in their tracks, and change them for the better.

Start with mindfulness of self. Find the root of the problem and establish a compassionate way to set yourself on a more beneficial path.

What kind of self-sabotage have you experienced? How do you re-route this habit? Tell us in the comments!

Healing energy is incredibly helpful to our body, minds, and hearts. This energy lives inside of us and is key to functioning and thriving. We can use the beautiful bright white light energy within to calm anxiety, reduce sadness, let go of limiting beliefs, and cleanse our emotional fields.

We can also harness healing energy when we’re sick. Sometimes when you’re not feeling great it can be hard to acknowledge that you will feel joyful again – you feel like you will never recover. Healing energy is like the transition from winter to spring – it feels nearly impossible after months of snow, but you know it will come.

You have all the healing energy you need already inside of you.

And . . . GUESS WHAT? You have all the healing energy you need already inside of you. All you have to do is tune into it.

How to Find Your Healing Energy

Turn your attention to what is working in your body. Start to deepen your breath as you continue to read this article. Notice how your mind becomes more centered and peaceful.

Your breath is your greatest asset – it can change the way you feel instantly. Imagine that each breath in is energetic and beautiful bright white light, and each breath out signals a clearing out of what no longer serves you.

How to Harness Your Healing Energy

Did you know that the turtle is a symbol of healing, good luck, and longevity? They represent patience, endurance, stability, and strength. They teach us that all things happen in divine timing, that we are at home in our bodies, and that it is okay to rest when we need to.

These three steps are inspired by the healing powers of the turtle. They’ll teach you how to harness your healing energy to regain your peace, health, and happiness!

Mantra For Healing:

On Your Inhale: Slow and steady

On Your Exhale: I am healing

Recommended Read: What Are Mantras and Why Do We Use Them in Yoga?

Step 1: Slow Down

Do you rush around trying to do everything for everyone? Are you busier than you have time to explain?

The turtle teaches us to slow down, which is why recognizing that you need to pump the breaks is the first step in healing yourself. When you pause to let your body settle, you activate your relaxation response. This allows your body to focus on healing. Your energy can be spent on realigning your system instead of exerting yourself to accomplish the things on your to-do-list.

Step 2: Treat Your Home With Love

Turtles are always at home in their shell. Think of your body as your home, because it truly is. Be sure to nourish your home with food that will sustain you. Eat natural, whole foods that will rebuild your strength and give you energy instead of hard-to-digest food that will take your energy away.

Step 3: Retreat Into Your Shell

Turtles can find grounding and comfort wherever they go because they know their home is always with them. In yoga, we create shapes with our bodies to create space for love and light in our bodies and minds.

You can imagine you are retreating into your shell by practicing Child’s Pose and visualizing a magical healing shell on your back. As you connect your forehead to the earth, notice how you can rock your head from side to side, signaling a clearing out of any thoughts of sickness that do not serve you.

You can state the mantra as you rest and retreat into this pose!

Go in Peace, Health, and Happiness

Whenever you need to clear space in your mind, free yourself from anxiety, release limiting beliefs, or regain vitality when you are sick, remember healing energy is inside of you. You are exactly where you are meant to be, and there is no need to rush. You can take time for yourself. Call on your breath, the turtle shape, and your mantra to bring yourself back into alignment.

Sending you light and love!

You Will Now See Calorie Counts On Menus Everywhere And People Have Thoughts

Chris Hondros / Getty Images

Starting on Monday, chain restaurants and other locations across the US that sell food, like coffeehouses and supermarket salad bars, will have to include calorie count information on their menus.

The rule is courtesy of Obamacare, or the 2010 Affordable Care Act, and is being put into place uninhibited by the current administration. It applies to any restaurant chain with at least 20 locations that have the same name and it’s not just restaurants – the rule includes movie theaters, grocery stores, vending machines, and any location that provides food or drink.

Calories counts are now mandatory on menus, and other nutritional information, such as fat and carbohydrates, must be made available on the premises.

“Consumers can also ask these establishments for additional nutritional information — provided, for example, as a booklet, handout or in electronic form — that includes the amount of sodium, fiber, sugars, total carbohydrates, saturated fat and protein for any standard menu item,” according to the FDA.

Although some places around the country have already made this labelling mandatory – notably, New York City – this is the first time it will be enforced nation-wide. Some chains have already been providing this information, such as McDonald’s, Panera Bread, and Starbucks.

Saul Loeb / AFP / Getty Images

The idea is that people can make healthier dietary choices if they know more about what they’re consuming. According to the Food and Drug Administration, people consume about one-third of their calories outside the home.

Research suggests that including nutrition information on menus can reduce consumption by 30 to 50 calories a day, according to the Washington Post.

Chris Hondros / Getty Images

“I truly believe that knowledge is power and having information can allow consumers to make an informed choice,” Vandana Sheth, a registered dietician and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, told BuzzFeed News.

She said it can be hard to know what’s in restaurant food, so the new labelling is especially helpful to people who track what they eat.

“Many of my clients who are trying to eat healthy or trying to lose some weight or watching their blood sugars for diabetes … if they have this information it’s something they can take into account,” she said.

Not everyone’s a fan though – some see it as government overreach and a burden on business owners. In 2011, Andrew Puzder, the CEO of Carl’s Jr., said the rules are “one of these nanny-state regulations that’s designed to solve a problem that isn’t really a problem at all.”

For many people however, it’s a welcome change.

If you choose to listen, that is.

And some people would rather live in blissful ignorance.

Stuck In a Rut? Ask For Divine Guidance to Ignite Your Passion + Find Your Purpose

divine guidance-featured

Have you ever caught yourself zoning out at work? And when you snap back, and realize this job . . . this life . . . it all leaves you feeling underwhelmed, uninterested, and alone. And you created it!

Life isn’t meant to be boring. You’re meant to live out your purpose!

Don’t worry, it’s not your fault. We’re taught to shut down the voice inside and to conform to what our parents, teachers, and peers want. Through words, through abuse, or sometimes through the “put that down” look our mum’s were so good at. We are told that in order to survive we must work in jobs we hate, we must make money however we can.

I was like that, and it wasn’t until I started following my divine guidance that I FINALLY opened myself up to the possibilities of my power.

Here’s how to quit your job and travel the world instead.

What Is Divine Guidance?

Divine guidance is the key to accepting your true gifts in life. When you ask your soul to guide you, you are allowing something bigger than yourself to guide your life. And, as an added bonus, you can heal your pain!

Divine guidance is your connection to your soul. It’s inside of you right now! Seriously. Take your hand and put it on your heart. There it is!

Your soul is the purest thing inside of you – inside of all of us. It offers divine guidance for true healing. It’s the part of you that is always connected to source energy, and is never disrupted by feelings, emotions, or abuse. It is the pure connection you have to something bigger.

When you ask for divine guidance, you don’t have to go very far. Actually, you don’t have to go anywhere. You just need to touch your hand to your heart, and you’re instantly connected back to your center, to your purpose – to divine guidance.

Waking up every day with a sense of belonging, purpose, and connection to yourself? Yes, please!

Why You Need (At Least) a Little Divine Guidance in Your Life

Everyone is born with specific talents and gifts in this lifetime. Some are super good with animals, some are clairvoyants, some are amazing at algorithms.

It’s more than just your job, a lot more actually. But a job is a really easy way of looking at whether you need divine guidance in your life or not. So let’s take a little quiz! Yay, quizzes!

Answer yes or no:

Are you living out your full potential at your job?

Do you get to wake up every day, live your life on your own terms, treat yourself right, AND express your gifts to the world in a loving way?

Do you feel authentic when you’re working?

Is this the job that you TRULY want?

If you answered yes to everything, congrats! You’re awesome! You may now click away to more interesting things. If you had any no’s, however, you might want to keep reading.

For Me, Divine Guidance Looked Like This:

Before I surrendered to divine guidance in my life, I was living an extremely stressful life as a receptionist. Trying to make everyone else happy, for low wages, and just sort of “getting through the day.”

After I surrendered to divine guidance, I began healing all the pain that was holding me back. I started my own business. I get to write every day, about things that are vitally important to me. And I got to connect online with hundreds of other women who are healers. It f*cking awesome!

All because one day I realized what divine guidance feels like, and I decided that I would keep seeking that feeling no matter what.

Some days I’m better at it than others, but every day I am moving closer and closer to living my dream life. No, scratch that . . . to living MY life. It was always there, this writing for a living, connecting with people, healing my pain. I just had to choose to accept it.

How to Get Really Good at Asking For and Receiving Divine Guidance:

When I think of the process of healing your life I get this image in my mind of human lungs. Have you ever seen what they look like when you breathe in? It’s one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen.

That’s what divine guidance looks like to me. Before we start accepting it our lungs are flat, they don’t have any air. The more we breathe love into our lives, the bigger our hearts get, and soon we’re just bursting at the seams with divine love and guidance.

Wanna start right now? Close your eyes . . . wait no! Read this first, and then close your eyes.

Close your eyes. Take 3 deep breaths. Say the following: “I am divine love. I accept divine love into my life. Thank you, thank you, thank you for guidance to become my true self. Thank you for helping me heal my pain and get closer to my authentic self.”

Then put your hand on your heart and say: “I love you”

How amazing is that?!

The Takeaway

Connecting to divine guidance doesn’t have to be difficult. It’s a lot easier than you think. All you have to do is connect to yourself. Here are some simple ways you can connect to your heart:

  • Meditation
  • Dancing
  • Singing
  • Bathing
  • Doing yoga
  • Going on a run
  • Walking in the park
  • Affirmations
  • Energy healing
  • Therapy

Good luck on your divine journey, and if you want some of my guidance you can check out my website.

Feeling Uninspired? Use Meditation to Boost Your Creativity – Here’s How

meditation-creativity-featured

Meditation has quite an impressive number of benefits, and among them is its mind-blowing impact on your creativity. If you’re a creator of any kind – playing with yoga, dance, painting, or cuisine, meditation for creativity has many surprises in store for you.

Since I became a yoga teacher and embarked on this path, I’ve found myself enjoying the process of creating new classes, writing blog posts, and sharing on Instagram. It is freeing to let my creativity shine through my everyday work while I connect with the yoga community and my students.

If you’re a creator yourself, you’ll know creativity is an elusive creature. Sometimes your mind doesn’t cooperate. You could experience writer’s block – I find that sometimes my lack of confidence takes over and has me wondering if what I’m writing about and talking about in class actually brings value to the world.

On the days you feel down and uninspired, stop everything. Try reading, watching documentaries and TV shows, or listening to podcasts and music because to feel inspired, you need inspiration, right? Inspiring input feeds your creative mind.

And then, try to meditate.

How Meditation For Creativity Works

Mediation comes in handy when tracking down creativity. Here’s how:

1. It helps you process your input.

Sitting in silence helps your brain organize all the colors, sounds, and words you’ve listened to or read. After all, creativity is about connecting ideas and connecting the dots, and this can be challenging if your mind is a mess.

Sitting in meditation gives you the space to set up your “inner desk,” and it helps bring the clarity you need to create.

2. It helps you see things from a different perspective.

This is a very useful tool. The reason we get stuck is because we lose precious perspective – we lose sight of the bigger picture. By observing and focusing on your breath, and staying present when your mind wanders, you can filter out the trivial from the important.

Making this distinction creates space in your mind, allowing you to see things more clearly.

var googletag = googletag || {};

googletag.cmd = googletag.cmd || [];

(function() {

var gads = document.createElement(‘script’);

gads.async = true;

gads.type = ‘text/javascript’;

var useSSL = ‘https:’ == document.location.protocol;

gads.src = (useSSL ? ‘https:’ : ‘http:’) +

‘//www.googletagservices.com/tag/js/gpt.js’;

var node = document.getElementsByTagName(‘script’)[0];

node.parentNode.insertBefore(gads, node);

})();

googletag.cmd.push(function() {

googletag.defineSlot(‘/268437716/In-article_Box1_336x280’, [336, 280], ‘div-gpt-ad-1451354753139-0’).addService(googletag.pubads());

googletag.pubads().enableSingleRequest();

googletag.enableServices();

});

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-1451354753139-0’); });

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

<ins class="adsbygoogle"

style=”display:inline-block;width:336px;height:280px”

data-ad-client=”ca-pub-1197790107334084″

data-ad-slot=”2648823852″>

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

3. It develops patience.

Being a creator – whatever it is that you create – requires lots of patience. Whether it’s painting, drawing, writing, baking, teaching, playing music, or dancing, you know the result is rarely there on Day 1.

Creating requires time, effort, dedication, and patience is a quality you can never have too much of. Sitting in meditation enables you to practice your patience, sitting, observing, practicing doing nothing and resting your mind.

4. It gets the ideas flowin’.

As we touched on earlier, meditation helps you to connect the dots and organize your mind. Going back to the image of the “inner desk,” imagine this: as you gather new supplies and new tools, you can spend time reorganizing things. Maybe instead of ordering by color you’ll start using shape, or instead of shape you’ll start using material, and so on.

Seeing things clearly frees up space. In your mind, this might materialize as a new topic you’d like to discuss on your blog, or maybe you’ll know how to pair two poses together for your next yoga or dance sequence. Words might pop into your mind for your next poem or your next book, you might find colors and images for your next painting.

So, stay focused. Take in the colors, the dialogues, the music, the settings, and the stories in from your sources of input. You can even take notes while you listen to music or watch your favorite show to make sure you’re paying attention to the details.

Once the show is over, sit down to meditate. Let your mind process it all and let the ideas come to you. Then, get creating and watch your magic unfold!

Harnessing Your Creativity Through Meditation

Meditation is such a versatile tool. Not only does it bring you inner peace and help release physical tension, but it also leads you to connect to your mind and ideas in new ways and on a deeper level. As creators, we’d be making a mistake if we didn’t make use of it.

Remember that you can always return to meditation to harness your creative energy.

The 10 Best Sports Bras for Large Breasts

Unfortunately, the bounce factor for bustier women can be an exercise deterrent. Who wants to go for a run or knock out burpees when every hop, skip, and jump leads to pure pain? In fact, we’re pretty sure we all have that friend who’s had to double up on support. What’s more, a larger-breasted woman in the wrong bra can have serious health implications.

“If a sports bra has not been specifically designed and built to carry the weight of larger, heavier breasts, the bra straps may be too narrow and exert extra pressure on your shoulders,” explains LaJean Lawson, PhD, a sports bra researcher at Oregon State University and consultant to the sports bra industry. “If the amount and location of the pressure crosses over an area in the shoulders where nerves and blood vessels exit into the upper arms, a medical condition known as thoracic outlet syndrome can result.” Symptoms of TOS include numbness or tingling in the arms or hands, pain in the neck, shoulder, or hands, and even a weaker grip.)

So what do the well-endowed need to look for when shopping for a sports bra? Lawson says, there are three key things:

1. Look for minimal (controlled) stretch throughout the bra in areas like the cups, straps, and band.

2. Forgo the traditional sports bra, which has a single flat panel across the front, and opt for one with two separate cups that will control each breast instead.

3. Choose athletic supporters with more coverage such as a higher neckline, wider straps, and a substantial bottom band.

Romaine Lettuce E. Coli Outbreak Now In 22 States, And Even More People Are Getting Sick

This is a particularly bad strain of E. coli, and more than half of the people who have gotten sick have ended up in the hospital.

Far from slowing down, the outbreak linked to romaine lettuce is widening, the US Centers for Disease and Control announced Friday.

So far a total of 98 people in 22 states have gotten sick after eating romaine lettuce. That’s an additional 14 patients and three new states – Mississippi, Tennessee, and Wisconsin – since last week.

While chopped romaine sold either alone or in mixed salads was originally thought to be the culprit, last week the warning was expanded to include all types of romaine – chopped, whole heads and hearts of romaine, organic and baby romaine, and any salads or mixed salads that contain romaine.

The warning was updated after a group of inmates at a correctional facility in Alaska got sick from eating food containing whole romaine lettuce.

“People should still not eat any type of romaine lettuce unless they know for sure it does not come from the Yuma-growing region,” said Matthew Wise, deputy branch chief for outbreak response at Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at a press conference.

Here is a complete list of states with cases: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.

Yuma, Arizona is the general location of the outbreak’s source. Experts have not located the farm or farms responsible for the majority of cases, and don’t know if the contamination occurred during the harvesting, packaging, or distribution of the lettuce.

The CDC did identify one farm associated with the outbreak, but said it’s not the source for most cases. That farm, Harrison Farm of Yuma, Arizona, is thought to be responsible for the Alaskan cases linked to whole romaine, but not the rest of the cases, which have been traced to chopped romaine.

“We have not determined where in the supply chain the contamination occurred,” Wise said.

The US Food and Drug Administration is investigating at least two dozen farms as possible sources.

The type of bacteria linked to the outbreak is known as E. coli O157:H7, and it generally causes vomiting, bloody diarrhea, and cramps about three to four days after eating the lettuce. Most people recover in a week, but some can be hospitalized with more serious health problems and take longer to recover.

So far 53% of people in the outbreak have been hospitalized, compared to the 30% seen in most E. coli outbreaks. Ten people have developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, including three children. About 5 to 10% of people infected with this type of bacteria, known as Shiga toxin-producing (STEC) E. coli, get hemolytic uremic syndrome.

It’s the largest outbreak linked to that type of germ since a 2006 outbreak linked to spinach, which made 200 people sick. “We also saw severe illness in that outbreak,” Wise said.

People with hemolytic uremic syndrome may have a fever, fatigue, decreased urination, and bruises or bleeding, and the condition can cause kidney failure, high blood pressure, and neurological problems.

Although children and the elderly are most susceptible to hemolytic uremic syndrome, experts from the US Food and Drug Administration and the CDC emphasized that anyone can get seriously ill from this germ.

So far, no one has died in the outbreak.

This Couple Tried to Rescue a Rabid Bat, And It Took an International Effort to Track Them Down

A Swiss couple on vacation in Florida had to be tracked down by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Swiss authorities after the couple attempted to save a sick bat from a mall parking lot that later turned out to have rabies.

The couple was in Naples, Florida, when they come across the ailing bat. The husband, who works in pest control, decided they should take it to a local veterinarian to see if it could be helped. But the couple didn’t didn’t leave their names or any other information – just the fact that they were visiting from Switzerland. Five days later, the bat tested positive for rabies, which then triggered an international effort to find the couple.

The CDC searched the area for days with no luck before contacting the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health through a World Health Organization network. The Swiss federal agency issued a national press release and the couple called in to identify themselves. It may have saved their lives – infection with the rabies virus can be fatal, and is generally incurable if not caught early enough.

“A lot of visitors to the United States may not understand the risk associated with bats,” Emily Pieracci, a veterinary epidemiologist with the CDC, told BuzzFeed News.

She said about 1%–2% of bats carry the rabies virus and they account for the majority of human rabies cases in the US (about one or two cases per year).

The rabies virus can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months to incubate in humans before symptoms appear. The rabies vaccine is highly effective if given before symptoms appear, but not effective if the disease has progressed too far. Rabies symptoms can include fever, aches, and weakness that progresses to insomnia, confusion, paralysis, hallucinations, and fear of water, according to the CDC.

A 6-year-old boy died in Florida earlier this year after contracting rabies from a bat scratch.

“Once they get sick and start showing signs of rabies it’s almost 100% fatal,” said Pieracci.

The couple was able to start the vaccine the same day they identified themselves and are still healthy. The incident took place in January but was recently reported in CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

“We were able to potentially save their lives,” said Pieracci.

Bats with rabies may act oddly, such as having difficulty flying or being active during the day, which is unusual for the nocturnal animals. That makes them more likely to come into contact with humans, increasing the risk of exposure. If you find an injured or sick bat, the safest thing to do is to leave it alone and call a local wildlife center or public health department, Pieracci said.

“If they do handle a bat for some reason, or if they come in contact with a bat, they should seek immediate health care,” she said. Pets should also be taken for a rabies vaccine if they come into contact with a bat. People have gotten rabies even with no obvious scratches or bites, and any kind of contact with a rabid animal is considered risky.

Nathalie Karvonen, executive director of the Toronto Wildlife Centre, has seen her fair share of bats. The rehabilitation center has about 40 bats at present. She said that unlike other animals that could carry rabies – such as raccoons, foxes, and skunks – there’s no way to vaccinate bats.

“We do get rabid bats in from time to time because we’re the biggest wildlife center in the country,” she said.

Animals with rabies are always euthanized because they can’t be cured. Although caution should be taken, Karvonen stressed that the vast majority of bats don’t carry the disease and are an important part of the ecosystem, as well as endangered, in many cases.

People who work with animals that could carry rabies, or who are traveling to areas where it is prevalent, can get pre-exposure rabies vaccination, which can help reduce, but not eliminate, the risk of rabies.

5 Secret Health Benefits of Mushrooms You Need to Know

mushroom article

Mushrooms are powerful, natural medicine that the earth provides to us, but not many people know about all the health benefits of mushrooms. And no, we are not talking about those ‘shrooms that make you hallucinate.

There are more than 10,000 forms of mushrooms, each with their own benefits, including great levels of antioxidants and protein.

Depending on the type and known medicinal benefits, you can experience the health benefits of mushrooms in an extract, a supplement, or even as a flavorful addition to your favorite dish.

Here Are 5 Amazing and Lesser-Known Health Benefits of Mushrooms:

1. Immune System Boost

Mushrooms, even those white button mushrooms that are available in most supermarkets, are found to increase the production of antiviral proteins that protect and repair tissues, including those of your immune system.

Mushrooms have high levels of choline – a nutrient that promotes sleep, learning, and memory. Choline also reduces inflammation.

Mushrooms contain antioxidants comparable to many vegetables, including green beans, carrots, peppers, and tomatoes. Try Enoki mushrooms, which have a mild flavor, but pack an immune-boosting punch with anti-cancer benefits.

2. Treat Allergies

Mushrooms have demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties, and in some cases, can be used as a treatment for allergies and other breathing problems. Maitake and reishi mushrooms are said to protect your liver and help your body eliminate the leftover histamine from allergic reactions, as well as aid your body’s inflammatory response.

Fun anecdote: After years of terrible allergies to all things cute and fuzzy, I got a dog. By day two, I had the sniffles and itchies and hives from head to toe. I researched natural cures, and I learned about reishi, a mushroom extract that if taken for a long duration can reverse allergy symptoms.

I tried reishi extract, in combination with nettle tea and a natural supplement, the Allergy ReLeaf System – a mixture of nettle, licorice root, vitamin C, turmeric and other natural herbs and supplements – and it worked! Eight months later, I still don’t have allergy symptoms to my sweet pooch.

3. Heart Health

When ingested, mushrooms are a fat-free and healthy food source that is low in calories and sodium and offers filling fiber, which decreases your risk of obesity and heart disease.

Mushrooms also contain beta-glucans that improve insulin resistance and lower blood cholesterol levels, as well as B vitamins that turn carbohydrates into glucose to power your body and provide you with energy. Shiitake mushrooms are not only flavorful, but they are also known to have anti-tumor, anti-viral, and cholesterol-lowering properties.

Eat mushrooms for your cardiovascular health, as they are full of fiber, potassium and Vitamin C that work together to regulate blood pressure and reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease.

4. Weight Management and Nutrition

Mushrooms are full of dietary fiber (which is key to a properly functioning digestive system). They also reduce appetite and keep you feeling fuller longer.

Crimini mushrooms have a high concentration of vitamin B12, commonly found in animal food products, and are a great way for vegan and vegetarians to get these essential nutrients.

Portabello mushrooms, which have more potassium and fewer calories than bananas, contain B vitamins that are essential for a healthy metabolism and nervous system.

5. Cancer Prevention

Mushrooms contain the mineral selenium, which helps your liver function properly. Selenium also helps your body detox potentially cancer-causing compounds.

Mushrooms are also an excellent source of Vitamin D, and it’s the only vegetable or grown source of this essential vitamin. Just like people, mushrooms produce Vitamin D when exposed to sunlight, so growers expose mushrooms to the sun to promote the production of this essential vitamin.

Vitamin D, when found in mushrooms, can inhibit the growth of cancer cells, and also supports healthy teeth and bones.

Mushrooms also contain folate, which aids in the repair of the DNA synthesis within your body and prevents the formation of cancer cells from mutating your DNA, as well as beta-glucan fibers, which stimulate your immune system to fight cancer cells and prevent tumor growth and production.

Maitake mushrooms are said to reduce blood pressure and blood sugar, as well as have anti-cancer, anti-viral, and immune-boosting properties. Mushrooms, specifically crimini and portobello, are full of free-radical fighting antioxidants, which are substances that protect cells from damage.
